There are two types of pumps, Ground Water Pumps and Foul Pumps.
Ground Water Pumps are a waterproofing system's final piece of the puzzle. Once the water is collected through the waterproofing system via membrane and channels, the water is then directed into the pump where it is then flushed out through the pipes to its desired location. Foul Pumps are the pumps that get rid of waste and are usually connected to the bathroom/utility room.
The pumps come with a float switch which, when raised to a certain level, will automatically flush out the contents surrounding the pump.
A second pump is a great option, as it will automatically start should the first pump fail. This ensures your basement will not flood and is a great backup plan.
Another type of backup plan is a 'battery back-up', where if there is a power outage, the large battery will kick in and it will save your basement from being flooded.
We at Elmpride recommend to have a 'High-Level Alarm' as part of the pump system. This works with the pump and the alarm will sound if the water level gets too high. If there is no backup system in place, these alarms will at least tell you that there is a problem, and action must be taken.
