We were in July and expect the sun to be shining, but as always, the British weather never ceases to amaze us. Having had months of rain occur in just days, we had a message from Mavji. That his ground water pump has failed, and the chamber has backed up, flooding parts of the basement in a housing development he built.

After gaining some further information from Mavji over the phone, we visited site (based in East London) 2 days later and began to work out what had happened.

After pumping out the initial backed up water, we had seen the pump had seized because it was over working due to the high volume of water. No secondary back up pump had been installed, leaving the single pump to do all the work until it couldn’t cope anymore. Furthermore Mavji didn’t have a high level alarm. High level alarms trigger a warning sound, once a certain level has been reached and the float switch has been activated, this would have alerted Mavji to know something is going wrong.

We explained our findings to Mavji, and we recommended that he put in 2 pumps and a high level alarm, to help guard against this issue arising again, to which he agreed.

We carried out the work the same day and Mavji was very happy, but one of the most overlooked details when you have a foul or ground water sump pump station is that they need to be serviced regularly. We explained to Mavji, that we will carry out an annual service, to ensure that the pump and the chamber is clean and in working order. We go through a thorough checklist to ensure all is in order. He signed our service contract form, and we know have him down for our regular servicing.
